This Range Rover Sport Is A Massive Smartphone-Operated RC Car

Land Rover has been showcasing its new autonomous car technology, which gives drivers the option to get out and control the vehicle remotely with a smartphone

Remember that bit from Tomorrow Never Dies, when James Bond controls a BMW 7-series from the back seat? Thanks to some new autonomous car tech from Land Rover, you’ll soon be able to that for real. Well, almost; it only works at speeds of up to 4mph.

Still, it looks like some incredibly interesting tech, as demonstrated in this video by a Range Rover Sport research vehicle. It’ll let you control the throttle, brakes, steering, and even switch between the high and low range gearbox modes.

Practical applications could include remotely manoeuvring the car out of a tight spot - useful if some imbecile has parked too close to you - or letting you be your own spotter while you navigate over tricky off-road terrain. Or, if you’re a terrible human being, pranking a friend who’s just fallen asleep in the passenger seat…
