Reborn Porsche 928?

With Porsche on a model line expansion rampage, rumors of a reborn Porsche 928 model don't come as surprising. A report by AutoExpress notices a hint from Porsche that it could be coming.

Just think of the possibilities! A new 928 would offer Porsche the ability to compete in the high-end GT realm that it hasn't played in since the demise of the previous 928. A Porsche take on a Bentley Continental GT? That would work.

Rumors have been swirling for few years speculating on a rebirth of the 928 GT. Porsche recently held a roundtable at the Shanghai Motor Show, where design chief Michael Maur dropped the hint that he was working on a "successor to the 911". Following that, it emerged that the "successor the the 911" could be much more then a simple evolution of the 911, but instead a fifth model variant.

Hmm, it sounds like 1977 all over again. At the time, Porsche thought that the 928 would one day emerge as the replacement to the venerable 911. As we all know, it didn't quite turn out that way - the 911 is still trucking on today, as successful as ever.

A new 928 could offer Porsche a way to increase sales though and tap into a market it's been missing out on.

That is a rendering I found online. I think it offers a very good idea of what a future 928 could look like. A new 928 is a Porsche I would love to own, much more so then a 911 or Boxter. The original 928 had a very long life span, being produced from 1977-1995. Although it never sold in the numbers Porsche predicted, times have changed now and I could see a new one doing very well.

The recently introduced 4-door Panamera offers a good base from which to produce such a vehicle. Before the development of the Panamera, Porsche would have had to develop a new 928 from scratch. That;s not the case anymore though, and a new 928 could help reduce costs for the Panamera by increasing economies of scale. Certainly seems like a good business proposition to me, let's see if anything comes of it!
