Rejoice: Lamborghini V12s Will Be Around For A While Longer
In a world where even the humble V8 is under threat, it feels like it’s just a matter of time before V12 engines are consigned to the history books. However, in a rare piece of good news for lovers of the no replacement for displacement ethos, it looks like we should be able to enjoy cars from Lamborghini with socking great V12s stuffed in the middle for a little while longer.
Speaking to Autocar, Stefano Domenicali - who joined Lamborghini as CEO from Ferrari in February - discussed a number of topics including the all important area of engines.
On the prospect of cars with electric power, Domenicali is open to the idea, but it sounds as though we don’t need to worry about the V12 being ditched as a result. “Our major customers and dealers around the world say: ‘Please do not touch the V12’. So we will continue to work in that direction,” he said.
So, how about downsizing? It’s looking promising in that area too:
“Our niche is small and it is sometimes easy to run off following everyone else…That is a mistake that we do not have to make. In the short term, there is still a lot of development potential in the V12.
“Of course, we need to understand what the market is doing in terms of emissions and legislation, but I don’t see that will be a problem.”
Of course, “development potential” doesn’t rule out turbocharging, but we’d be surprised if we see a turbo V12 Lamborghini any time soon. For now, we’re just looking forward to the prospect that screaming N/A 6.5-litre lump punching past the 800bhp mark…

Wonder if a V12 1500cc with twinturbo would sound as nice as a supercharged v16 1500cc

Sad that Ferrari didn’t grow a pair and stick to NA.
