Rolls-Royce has unveiled the Phantom Aviator Collection - 35 Coupés with bespoke detailing reminiscent of Charles Rolls's Supermarine S6B, one of the 1930s fastest aircraft. No, Not the sunglasses.

Rolls himself was a committed aviator, “Our founding forefather Charles Stewart Rolls was a pioneer who pushed the boundaries of motoring and aviation to the limit”, said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls-Royce CEO. Rolls died in 1910 - the first Briton ever to be killed in a plane crash.

Each of the 35 Coupés will be finished in Aviator Grey, with contrasting matt bonnets, windows and grill surrounds. A Thommen aviation-grade clock replaces the standard car's timepiece, and the transmission tunnel is finished in anodised aluminium "with exposed torx fixings and swage lines that echo the oil cooling veins on the S6B fuselage side". The mahogany fascia is a tribute to "early, record setting propellers".

Embossed on the glovebox is a quote from Rolls: "The power of flight is as a fresh gift from the Creator, the greatest treasure yet given to man”, and a plaque on the centre console features a recreation of his signature.

Rolls' are remaining typically coy regarding pricing, but we expect it to carry a hefty premium over the standard car's £250k asking price.

Is this just badge engineering, and is it really worth thousands more than the standard car? Let us know in the comments.
