Rosberg Unceremoniously Shuts The Door On Hamilton's Chance Of Pole

Nico Rosberg controversially took pole position for the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix after a mistake on his final lap, which denied team-mate Lewis Hamilton the chance to challenge the lead.

The German made the mistake at the Mirabeau hairpin in the final minute of the top 10 shoot-out. He locked up and took to the escape road, before reversing back onto the circuit. With the yellow flags flying, those approaching the corner on their final laps - including Hamilton - had to back off and were unable to improve.

Angry Hamilton later hinted that he thought the mistake was deliberate, while Rosberg firmly denied the accusations.

Comparisons were swiftly made to Michael Schumacher’s La Rascasse incident in 2006, where he was dropped to the back of the grid after the stewards decided - after a detailed investigation - that he had deliberately parked his car at the corner to protect his position at the top of the timesheets.

Rosberg’s off-track excursion was investigated by the stewards, but after hearing from the driver and team representative and analysing the data and footage, they decided to take no further action.
