Running A $4500 Mercedes S600 Isn't As Ruinous As You'd Think

Bold used car buyer and YouTuber Tyler Hoover goes through the costs of running his V12 2007 S-Class, and it's not as shocking as you'd think...

Running a 10-year-old V12 Mercedes S-Class - particularly one that’s been bought for $4500 - should be financial hell. But over the course of 20 months, Tyler Hoover’s 2007 example hasn’t been as hard on the wallet as you might expect.

OK, so it’s still thrown out some fairly substantial bills, but a total outlay of $19,068 including the car itself is not bad at all. Particularly as it’s just been sold for $12,000, leaving Hoover ‘only’ $7000 worse off. Many people swallow more than that in depreciation alone over that kind of time frame without even thinking about it. In fact, as Hoover points out, that’s less than it costs to run a new Honda Civic. Not bad.

The car’s been bought by fellow journalist and YouTuber Freddy ‘Tavarish’ Hernandez, who has a similar penchant for ‘brave’ used car choices…

If you ever manage to find a crashed Zonda, or any crashed supercar less than 20 years old for $1,5k, call me right now.

If I basically got it right, you’re saying spending 3.2 times the price of the car in repairs & maintenance in 20 months “is not bad at all”?

Watch the video. It was 6000+labor for a new engine. it was 4500 because. It had a locked up engine. Better than a lexus ls or a 7 series.

That’s horse crap, can you imagine how many cents per mile it costs to run the car? And “that’s less than it costs to run a new Honda civic” for 20 months. FALSE. I could engine swap a civic a few times for that money.

Did you even watch his videos? He knew beforehand that the S-Class had a broken motor. The majority of the money went into sourcing and installing a used working motor, which, again, he knew he had to spend that before even buying it.

7 grand loss, is 7 grand loss. The loss alone is 2 project cars. I seriously doubt this video.
This car costed you 4 times the price you bought it just to maintain it. My car costs me 350 euros per year for maintaining it, plus 314 euros tax per year, plus 90euros X4 for every 3 months of insurance (its cheaper than going for full year, at least in GR) and thats all unless i need new tires…
and you are talking about 19.000 for 20 months, you MUST think we all are stupid.
