From club-level championships up to the FIA-spec MX-5 endurance racers, motorsport and Mazda’s pint-sized roadster have gone hand-in-hand for years. As such, it’s no surprise that the latest Miata has undergone a because racecar transformation.

These little beasts will race in a new MX-5 Global Cup series, which will comprise of national championships in several yet to be named countries. The interesting detail is that these national championships will come together at a ‘Global Shootout’ at the end of the season, where the series champion will be crowned. Where will this take place? Technical details are thus far limited - other than the fact that it’ll run a 2.0-litre Skyactive-G four-pot petrol - as the choices for the tyres, suspension and safety gubbins will all be settled on after a winter development period.
