There once was a time when buying a hybrid meant getting the keys to something dreary like a Toyota Prius. Those days seem firmly behind us; not only do we have hybrid supercars like the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918, we now have this: the VW Golf GTE, a plug-in hybrid hot hatch.

Unveiled today ahead of its Geneva debut next month, the GTE has a 148bhp 1.4-litre TSI engine, which gives the car a total power output of 201bhp when combined with an electric motor. That's incredibly close to the Golf GTI's 217bhp, and the torque figure is identical to its petrol-only brother at 258lb/ft.

Despite the battery adding an extra 160kg to the GTE's kerb weight, it'll still do 0-62mph in a respectable 7.6 seconds and top out at 135mph. On battery power alone it has a range of 31 miles, and it has a huge combined fuel economy figure of 130mpg. As far as C02 emissions go, it'll puff out just 35g/km.

It'll be available with a six-speed DCT gearbox, and comes with the all-important classic GTI tartan seats.
