Sebastian Vettel Compares DRS To Throwing Bananas In Mario Kart

Despite F1 introducing it way back in 2011, the debate about DRS (Drag Reduction System) hasn’t ever subsided. Is it an effective way to spice up the racing, or is it just a bit fake?

Plenty of drivers have spoken out against the device, one of them being Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. At the Austrian Grand Prix earlier this year he likened the addition of a third DRS zone to playing Mario Kart, at in the lead-up to the Japanese Grand Prix, he’s made the same reference.

He said:

“I’m not a big fan of DRS. Now we are in Japan I think Mario Kart, if you remember them, it might be more fun to throw bananas out of the cockpit than have DRS. So maybe it’s better idea than to have DRS.

“I don’t like, I think it’s artificial. I think we should find a different way to make the cars follow each other closer and not have DRS.”

Some drivers, on the other hand, have called for a second DRS zone to be added at Suzuka’s high-speed 130R corner, but the FIA ultimately decided it wasn’t safe to be taken with the wing flap open.

The FIA intends to ban the technology by 2021, as aero rule changes implemented from that season onwards should allow F1 cars to follow each other much more closely than they’re able to currently.

Of course it is not safe to have your rear wing open at 130r. We have a word for that: suicide!

They did have a DRS zone for Silverstone at Turn 1, though…

I like DRS
It looks cool in action and it allows more overtaking even if its “artificial” - it’s still more exciting than no overtaking

if f1 just raced at ovals, you could have legit and a quantity of overtakes cuz draft

Agreed. In my opinion F1 has become too “game-ified”. It’s just too confusing for casual fans.

Remove drs zones and allow active aero for whole track and car.

just remove active aero completely so you atleast have slipstream, active aero will decrease competition exponentially because more disturbed air = further following distance and more car development
