Shelby GT500 Cobra: For When 662bhp Just Isn't Enough

To honour the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra, and pay tribute to its late creator, a group of companies including Ford, Ford Racing and Shelby American, but collectively known as the “Friends of Carroll Shelby”, have come together to build a one-of-a-kind 2013 Mustang GT500.

The 2013 Cobra is a one-off of which Mr Shelby himself would be proud. Using the 662bhp GT500 as a base, Ford and Shelby American have added a 4.0-litre Whipple supercharger that helps up power to 850bhp (yes, that's eight hundred and fifty) from the Ford Racing V8. A Shelby American wide-body kit shrouds a new set of 13-inch wide rear wheels, clad in 345-section rubber (in other words, its rear tires are wider than the ones you’d find on a Lamborghini Aventador).

The car’s bodywork is finished in Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes - like many of the Cobras Shelby built in the 60s.

Ford board member Edsel Ford II, Ford’s group vice president for sales and marketing Jim Farley, and Shelby American president John Luft unveiled the special ‘Stang at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, where Cobra is the marque of show for 2012.

Farley said: “Even at 89 years of age, Carroll was an inspiration to us all. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the original Shelby Cobra. The one-off car we have created represents the very idea he had about making the 2013 Shelby GT500 into a true Cobra.”

Luft said that the car will tour the States, before being put to good use in “a way Carroll would appreciate”. Hmm, cryptic.
