Smart Forstars: Guess The Movie...
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get back to Smart. The ForTwo has been with us since the 17th Century, or thereabouts. Rumour has it they were used as cannonballs by French forces during the Battle of Trafalgar - which should explain why no British ship suffered any damage. Whatsoever…
Anyhow - this is the new Forstars “sports-utility coupé”, another fully-electric city car that previews the brand’s future design direction. In other words, this could well be a “concept-ified” version of the next ForTwo. Finally.
Why Forstars? Well, smart says it’s a “tongue in cheek reference” to the car’s convex glass roof - through which you can gaze wondrously at the night sky, apparently - and the fact it’s got a forward-facing integrated video projector. If more carmakers start doing this, they’ll put West 'Cost' Customs out of business…
Were the projector to make production, we’re sure it’d only be so long before someone tried to watch The Sweeney on the move while aggressively tailgating white Transits around the M25 at 70mph. Us, probably. The resulting accident? Massive.
Power comes from a brushless electric motor with 80bhp and 96lb ft of torque. The top speed is quoted as being over 80mph.
Though still recognisable as a Smart, the Forstars is chunkier, and marginally more aggressive than the current ForTwo. Like Arnie’, it’s been on the ‘roids - and as such has grown wider and longer, too. The looks? Broadly contentious - so we’ll leave you to make your own mind up.
The interior is typically extravagant and equally controversial, with “hammock-like” seats and a U-shaped steering wheel.
It’ll make its public debut at the Paris motor show later this month and we'll be there to poke fun at it.
