South African Cab Driver 'Dragged To Death' By Police Van
Shocking video footage which shows Mido Macia - a 27-year-old taxi driver - being handcuffed to a South African police van and dragged down the road has emerged online, sparking worldwide outrage.
The event - which took place on Thursday in a town neighbouring Johannesburg - was filmed by a local newspaper journalist and clearly shows the man being handcuffed to the marked police van by police officers. Onlookers are heard shouting in Zulu "What has this guy done?".
A police representative said that police initially stopped Macia after he was caught obstructing traffic. It is then reported that the man assaulted an officer before threatening them with a weapon. The 27-year-old was then overpowered, and made an example of in public.
Macia was later found dead in his police cell with internal bleeding. An inquiry into his death has been launched.
