Since they’re rare, have a cracking back story and are the first ever M road cars, these mid-engined BMWs are never cheap to buy. However, this example that’s being sold by Mint Classics in Münster is pricey even by M1 standards, as it’s up for £603,000; double the going rate.

The reasons for this particularly vast price tag are twofold: firstly, the mileage is very low, with just 17,500km (10,800 miles) on the clock, and secondly, that colour is incredibly rare. Everything else is as per the standard M1, which means a mid-mounted 3.5-litre straight-six kicking out 269bhp, and a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds.

Want something a little more potent? An ex-competition M1 (above) from BMW’s Procar series is also for sale, although no price is listed.

Which would you rather have, given the choice?
