Remember that bonkers Prodrive-fettled Subaru WRX STI we were talking about a few months ago? Rally driver Mark Higgins has now had his chance to hurl it around the 37.5 mile Snaefell Mountain Course at this year’s Isle of Man TT, and has already smashed his previous record.

This Subaru WRX STI Just Smashed The Isle Of Man TT Car Lap Record

Last year in a mostly standard WRX STI he clocked a 117.510mph average, but he’s eclipsed that run today with a 126.971mph, 17min 49.75sec lap. To put that in context, the current lap record for bikes is 16min 58.254sec, equating to 133.393mph.

The car has more runs too (TeamCT will actually be taken for a passenger ride in the car on Monday), so we could yet see a faster time. Unlike the car Higgins used last year this WRX STI is a lot less standard, and as well as having new aero and suspension it’s kicking out over 500bhp. We can’t wait to see what else it might be capable of.

I want to see a true time-attack car go at it, like the black evo 8 (I think)

There’s too many high speed sections where the drag of a setup like that could well slow it down

Shame it’s not smoother roads without jumps then they could send a single seater round, or something like the Radical SR8

126mph… very nearly as quick as a 600 around there. Very impressive.

Was pretty impressive to see it go in the flesh. Looked and sounded great, a little more left to come no doubt with 3 runs left to go in the week. <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebo…; width="500" height="460" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true"></iframe>

I’ve only ever seen WRXs testing on the isle of man tt. Do they ever let other rally cars set times? I’d be down to see a volkswagen R or something give it a shot

I wouldve thought a track-day toy would be the fastest 4 wheeled thing around there. Lotus 3-eleven or Radical.
