Take A Sneaky Look Under The Skin Of The Mazda MX-5 RF's Fancy Folding Roof

We've all seen those cool videos of the new hard top Miata's clever roof in operation, but this animated version shows us what's happening behind the scenes

As a ‘retractable fastback’, the Mazda MX-5 RF is very much lie a mini version of the Porsche 911 Targa. The clever roof you see here can open and close in around 12 seconds at speeds of up to 6mph, and - impressively - doesn’t rob the RF of any boot space compared to the standard car.

Mazda revealed earlier this month that the MX-5 RF will start at £22,195 in the UK. Would you have one over the soft-top?

Love the shape of the RF, so much so I think i’d take it over the soft top.

It looks like car companies across all prices ranges, getting the hang of making sweet convertibles now. A convertible in the 90’s mostly meant a chopped roof replaced by cloth or removable glass panels above your head. Not that those were all ugly cars, but we all remember the drawbacks:

  • Excessive road noise on the highway
  • Manual removal
  • Water leakage everywhere
  • Huge amounts of lost trunk space due to the roofs shape and size
  • And yes, sometimes also looks as some were just chopped up cars…

Let’s hope that those are all a thing of the past! Nice work Mazda, i like it.
