There's A New Sub-VXR Vauxhall Corsa GSi Coming

Vauxhall is expanding the spiced-up GSi range to include a new Corsa with VXR-inspired looks - but without the insurance bill
There's A New Sub-VXR Vauxhall Corsa GSi Coming

Vauxhall is planning a warmed-up Corsa to sit below the VXR, combining some of that car’s aggressive styling with cheaper ownership costs – especially for insurance.

According to reports, the GSi badge already resurrected on the well-sorted new Insignia will be used for the new brisk Corsa. The engine will be the same turbocharged 150bhp-ish 1.4 unit used in existing Corsa models, but that will help to keep costs down.

It’s expected to arrive towards the end of this year but it’s not yet clear whether GSi will replace the long-serving SRi, which has traditionally been a good seller in the UK. It will be front-wheel drive and most of the parts from vanilla Corsas will be transferred over, but the suspension should see an upgrade to improve the GSi’s handling.

Interestingly, Vauxhall is all-but abandoning the VXR range, with just the 202bhp Corsa left on its books. Instead, the GSi line will spread. After the Corsa, the next to get the badge will be the Astra, and we don’t expect it to stop there. Warmed-over versions of its SUVs will surely follow.

The price is expected to be at the high end of the range, but obviously has to fall short of the VXR’s roughly £20,000 entry point.

I know the Yaris GRMN will come to mind, but they are limited and not a fully production car, but this will come in place…

Glad to see Vauxhall to take a step towards making cars more exciting but also sad that they don’t want to bother with making more VXR cars (Astra?!)

Sure, it’s only a small badge, but I like that they bring back the GSi name. The older Opel performance models (from the late 80s to the early 2000s) all were called GSi, before they switched over to the OPC name. I think they never were called like that at Vauxhall though. The identical Vauxhall models were called GTE IIRC.

There is already a Corsa with VXR-esque body styling but normal Corsa mechanical parts. Its called the (mass-produced) Limited Edition, the chav favourite.

We need this in the US. I mean we got the Insignia GSi as the Buick Regal GS, so this would be perfect at replacing the discontinued Buick Verano.

Verano is bigger than this. Verano and cruze are built on the past genre astra.

Many people often miss the point of the Corsa, they always wonder why would you buy a Corsa D for the same price as a good BMW 3series, simple answer: Reliability, practicality, insurance and stuff like that and with the new GSi you will get some speciality to it
