Three V8 Lexus Models Have Been Recalled Over Faulty Fuel Pumps

Lexus is recalling large numbers of V8-engined RC F, GS F and LC coupes over a risk of fire relating to a high-pressure fuel pump.

The cars affected are the 2015-2018 RC F, 2016-2018 GS F, and 2018 model-year LC 500. Each uses the same engine; Lexus’ 5.0-litre normally-aspirated V8 producing 471bhp. It’s not clear how many cars are affected but sales figures over the years suggest an overall five-figure number is most likely.

In the sadly V8-shy UK the effects are limited to 388 cars. Lexus GB has confirmed to us that the process of getting the cars fixed has already started.

In a statement Lexus confirmed the problem relates to one of the two high-pressure fuel pumps fitted to each car. Over time, the cover on one of them could “become damaged” and lead to a fuel leak, which then increases the risk of fire.

Lexus dealers will check all the affected cars and replace both fuel pumps with revised, improved ones at no cost. Owners in North America will be contacted by post starting in early April. In the meantime, if you smell a strong petrol smell beneath the bonnet, don’t drive the car again until it’s checked.

A similar recall has also been authorised for the US-spec Camry, where fuel hoses might not be connected properly, could work loose and cause a fuel leak. Again, remedies are offered free of charge.

To give credit where it’s due, Lexus has been totally up-front about the problem and is doing the right thing by customers. You can’t really say fairer than that.
