Yep, people are talking about a Gran Turismo film adaptation once again. Specifically, who’s going to direct it; according to the Hollywood Reporter, it’s Joseph Kosinski who’s in talks with Sony over taking the helm of the GT film.

Kosinski’s only feature film directing credits to date are Tron: Legacy and Oblivion (the latter is that disappointing 2013 sci-fi effort with Tom Cruise in, if you needed reminding), but the 40-year-old has quite a bit of experience when it comes to working with video game titles. Two of the most celebrated video game adverts of all time - the ‘Mad World’ Gears of War ad and Halo 3’s ‘Starry Night’ commercial - were both directed by him.

At this early stage, details about what the film might entail are scarce, but there was previously talk of a plot revolving around a gamer who becomes a racing driver. A fictionalised version of one of the recent GT Academy stories, perhaps.

We can see this thing going down two undesirable paths: either it’ll stay in development hell for years - as many potential video game film adaptations do - or the Gran Turismo brand will end up thoughtlessly tacked on to a generic summer blockbuster.

What do you think?
