Turning Lane Assist Into A Makeshift Autonomous Mode Is A Fantastically Stupid Idea
This driver - possibly in Poland - thought it'd be a great idea to trick a VW Passat into thinking he or she was still behind the wheel, effectively turning the lane assist and adaptive cruise control features into an autonomous mode
This is a trick we’ve seen before. By jamming whatever that object is in the steering wheel, the car thinks the driver still has a hand on the wheel, meaning the lane assist feature happily continues to function without throwing a hissy fit.
This bodge, combined with the adaptive cruise control system, effectively turns the B8 VW Passat into a semi-autonomous vehicle, and the driver is even able to hop over to the passenger seat and let the car do all the work. The systems aren’t designed for this purpose though, so I’m sure we don’t have to explain further why this is a really, really stupid idea…

What’s more astonishing is the song being played at this very moment.
Gloria Estefan - Conga
Perfect mode for a naptime. No hands on the steering wheel, no feet working the pedals. Car can handle itself. I dont see the problem.
These are NOT autonomous cars, these are LIMITED systems that are not perfect at what they do. The system depends on the fact that the driver is still alert, you can figure out the consequences.
People like this shoud be banned to drive till they die!
Yes! how can you drive if conga is being played? you shoud dance!
And I thought Americans were stupid.
That conga gives “the touch” to the video
Well… I mean it works
How many autonomous Passats have crashed? None. So its better than Tesla
(jk ofc, this is stupidly dangerous)
“By jamming whatever that object is (…)”
Wait, what? DUDE!! That is clearly a cell phone, and its respective protective cover/pouch… FROM THE 90’S
