A Unique Lancia Thema 8.32 'Ferrari' Estate Is For Sale, And You Want It

Someone's gone to extreme lengths to create a Thema 8.32 Station Wagon, and the results are stunning

Somehow, this is the third time in the last few weeks that we’ve found ourselves talking about the Lancia Thema 8.32. First off, we reported that Rowan Atkinson’s example was up for auction. Then, we took inspiration from the sale to look at other weird, front-engined, transverse V8-powered cars. And for our third ‘Lancia Ferrari’ story, we bring you this: an 8.32 Station Wagon.

That’s right, Lancia’s famous Ferrari V8-powered Thema, but in estate form. If you’re thinking it was only ever built as a saloon, you’d be right - a one-off wagon was made for Italian industrialist and long-time Fiat boss Giovanni Agnelli (he also owned a convertible Delta Integrale, among other unusual custom vehicles), but this is not that car.

Spotted by Bring A Trailer, the Dutch-registered 8.32 we’re looking at is a bespoke project, apparently built from no less than four Thema donor cars. Even in the low-resolution images you can tell that this is a very pretty car, in its own boxy, oh-so 80s way. But we’ll have to dock Internet points for the lack of engine shot…

As a reminder, Thema 8.32s were given the Quattrovalvole version of Ferrari’s Dino V8, with a crucial difference: the crankshaft was of the cross-plane variety, rather than flat-plane. So, unlike a ‘normal’ Ferrari V8, it’ll burble.

So it doesn’t really sound like a Ferrari, and it doesn’t go like one either: with a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds, the 8.32 is barely faster than the substantially cheaper Thema Turbo. And putting that powertrain in the heavier SW body isn’t going to help. But who cares: outright performance isn’t the draw here.

When I started my career as test driver in Nardò Techinical Centre, it was still under Fiat group, and a left prototype of an estate 8.32 was used (with modification of course) as medical car.
