UPDATE #4: Behind The Scenes At The Mazda MX-5 World Launch And The Reveal
This is my view from inside the world launch of the all-new, gonna-be-totally-mind-blowingly-awesome fourth generation Mazda MX-5.
Watch the official Mazda MX-5 reveal live.
I’m in Barcelona in a building called ‘Madza Space’, which is a semi-permanent structure built by the firm especially for this important launch. It’ll also be used by the community when Mazda doesn’t need it.
Anyway, I digress. I’m currently sitting on a bar stool at a four-man table writing this. I’m right at the front of the stage, meaning that I’ll be one of the first people to see the new car at 03:00 local time. With us in the Mazda Space building are people with important-looking cameras, a DJ, a woman who just started singing that ‘shine bright like a diamond’ song, beautiful girls asking us if the WiFi works OK, and three generations of the MX-5.
They’re all completely standard, probably untouched and look amazing. Apart from the Mk2’s wheels, which are criminally ugly.
I’ve just heard that there’s a downstairs bit with comfy armchairs, which I’ll head over to in an hour or so ahead of the big reveal. Along for the ride are 100 or so journalists - mostly from Germany, the UK, Holland and France - who are chatting away, drinking and drinking some more.
What do you think of the MX-5’s new look? Vote here.
I’ll update this post with all the happenings during the evening (stay with me, people) so keep an eye out for those. Until then, think about any further questions you might want answering about the car. Speak soon!
Update 1: curtain down!
The curtain has dropped and the car is underneath a thin sheet. Yes, that’s a guy playing a sax…(apologies for the bad quality pics, the lighting here is mental):
Update 2: there’s a foosball table!
Update 3: one hour to go!
Just 60 minutes to wait until the new MX-5 is revealed to the world. People have stopped playing foosball and are beginning to sit down at their seats. The atmosphere is tense. The MX-5 had better be worth the lengthy wait. (Of course it will be!)
Update 4: the car has been revealed!
We still don’t have any info on the car, but we can now see what it looks like from all angles. It’s smaller than I expected.
