Attempting to change lanes after gingerly joining a sodden Autostrada, the driver punches the gas, sending the Spider into a deadly spin that sees it narrowly avoid colliding with a member of the public, before careering face-first into a guardrail.

There’s no news on injuries, but he should count himself lucky it didn’t catch fire.

We feel sorry for the impassioned fan (check out the seatbelt covers at 0:20), who captured the whole event on camera, too. It’s never easy watching a piece of handcrafted exotica meet its sticky end - as his language at the end of the video will testify. Don't even ask what "cazzo" means...

Update: More details have emerged about the smash overnight. Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports that the 458 had allegedly only been registered that morning, and that by the time the police arrived at the scene, it had disappeared. No casualties have been reported.
