The US Government Has Recalled The Ferrari 458 Because Its Boot Is Unescapable

Believe it or not, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a branch of the US government, requires that car boots have a secondary release inside the luggage compartment, to make escape possible in the highly unlikely event someone gets stuck in there. It’s been discovered that the aforementioned latches in the Ferrari 458 Italia and Spider’s front luggage compartments don’t work all that well, prompting the NHTSA to recall the car.

The secondary latch for the front trunk storage compartment may not release when the vehicle is stationary. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 401, “Interior Trunk Release.”

This rule seems particularly absurd, as unless you’re filming a hilarious skit for a Car Throttle video that goes a bit wrong, or you’ve just been kidnapped by some Mafia types, we’re unsure of how you might get stuck inside a boot. And in any case, you’re unlikely to fit a regular-sized human in the luggage compartment of the 458, which is absolutely tiny.

The recall affects 3082 458s manufactured between 2010 and 2013, and owners will need a trip to their local Ferrari dealer to solve the ‘issue.’
