This week we've been looking at used exotics we can't afford, and have locked our sights on this second-hand wafty coupe

First a Ferrari 360 Modena, and now a Maserati GranTurismo; we really are letting ourselves dream with our featured cars from the classifieds this week. But after seeing a video of a guy’s hot passenger ride in a Maserati GranCabrio this morning, we couldn’t help but go on the hunt for another used Italian exotic.

The GranCabrio arrived in 2010, so it hasn’t had quite as much time to depreciate as the coupe, which started production in 2007, so it’s the tin top we’re focusing on here. Mounted at the front of early GTs is a 4.2-litre V8, which is from the same family of engines as the units you’ll find in the likes of the Ferrari F430 and California. Here, it’s good for 405bhp, which gets the pretty coupe from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 177mph.

This 2008 example has done 18,000 miles, has a full service history, and is up for £40,000. As you’d probably guess from the name, these Masers are more wafty cruisers than out-and-out sports cars, but the S version injects a little more dynamism into the mix. These come with a 440bhp 4.7-litre V8, a six-speed semi-auto gearbox with a transaxle layout to aid weight distribution (as opposed to the standard car’s regular automatic ‘box), and revised suspension. If that sounds tempting, check out this 2009 S which is up for £49,450.

Once you’ve dropped £40-50k on one of these, of course, the expense isn’t over. You’ll be lucky to see 20mpg, tyres aren’t cheap, and brakes expensive to replace. Expect a service to cost around £1000-2000, depending on what needs changing at the time. They aren’t quite as costly to run as you might think, though, so long as you stick to good, knowledgeable, independent garages.

Would this be what you’d buy if you had a spare £40k, or would you go for something else? Let us know in the comments.
