Volvo Just Bought Polestar, And Plans To Make Ballistic Hybrid Models
We’ve already seen that when Volvo and Polestar racing work together - be it on the track or on the road - the results can be pretty damn good. With that in mind, we’re not objecting to Volvo today confirming that it’s bought the Gothenburg-based company outright, ensuring that hot Volvos with those little blue badges are here to stay.
As it’s just the car bit which Volvo has snapped up, the racing team - which will remain under control of team principle Christian Dahl - is set to be renamed.
Polestar’s new owner has also revealed what future hot Volvos are going to be like. The answer? They’ll be hybrids, and potentially very quick.
The company states that Polestar is to "utilise Volvo’s twin engine electrification technology to develop next generation performance cars." By that Volvo means hybrid technology, so in other words, an even more potent version of the new 395bhp T8 hybrid powertrain found in the new XC90 could end up in the next S60. This would give Volvo a stonking leftfield BMW M3 alternative, where the current S60 and V60 Polestars are more in 335i sort of territory.
Sales should also increase. Volvo expects to flog about 750 Polestar models in 2015, but it’s anticipated this will increase to 1000-1500 now the performance brand is under its direct control.
