It’d be easy to write off the XJ220 as a bit of a failure. It’s a well-known story: the car that was supposed to be V12 powered and four-wheel drive supercar ended up V6 turbo powered and rear-wheel drive. This, coupled with the early 1990s recession, led to many buyers cancelling their orders.

To make matters worse, its reign as the fastest production car was pretty short-lived, with the McLaren F1 unceremoniously pinching the title just a year after the Jag was released. As a result of all this, the poor old Jag has ended up being a little unoticed, as evidenced by the guide price for this 1994 example which Silverstone Auctions is putting under the hammer: £200,000-220,000.

OK, so that’s still quite a bit of money, but, relatively speaking, it’s a bargain. It was originally sold to the Brunei Royal Family, before coming back to the UK in 2002. It’s done just 6000 miles in its 20 years on Planet Earth. If you found a McLaren F1 with a similar mileage, you’d be looking at millions of pounds, rather than hundreds of thousands.

If you’re well off and fancy a supercar for around £200k, you’ve lots of options - a Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Huracan or McLaren 650S for instance - but instead, you could stand out from the crowd and buy this magnificent Jaguar. And even though over 20 years have passed since the car launched, you still won’t be wanting for performance, with 0-60mph possible in 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 213mph. Oh, and big dollops of turbo lag to make the power delivery seem all the more dramatic.

Have the readies to put in a cheeky bid, or just curious to see what this actually goes for? The car will go under the hammer on 15 November at the Birmingham NEC’s Classic Motor Show.
