Even amid the scourge of downsizing, it’s been an incredible year for performance cars. 2017 is, after all, the year that gave as the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, the McLaren 720S and - at the other end of the scale - the Honda Civic Type R.
But none of these cars are perfect, so who do you call it if you want to cut a roster of 13 fast cars down to seven? That’s easy: Chris Harris.
Here, as part of Top Gear’s Performance Car of the Year showdown, he heaps praise and gives out scathing criticisms in equal measure. Sometimes for the same car. All of this is set to numerous of shots of awesome cars going very sideways. Even the humble VW Up GTI gets in on the action…

They mean that the these kinds of tests are mainly about emotion. The Golf GTI isn’t an emotion car - it’s a more utilitarian choice. Put it this way, if I had the choice between taking a GTI or the Civic Type R for a 1-hour drive, it’d be the Type R, but if I had the choice between owning one of them, it’d be the GTI.
