Watch A Mazda RX2 Dragster Lose Control At 180mph
After nailing the burnout, hooking up a good launch, hitting every one of your gearchanges and keeping the thing in a straight line for a quarter of a mile, surely the hard bit's over in a drag race once you cross the finish line? Release the gas, roll out to a stop, surf a wave of dopamine coursing through your brain, then head to the pits to rebuild your engine.
Wrong.
As this racer hits the brakes at 180mph in his Mazda RX2 funny car - after a pretty lairy run - his problems are only just beginning...
This car is a monster, in case you weren't sure. Here's the same 1971 RX2 (this time fitted with parachutes) running a sub-7sec quarter-mile at 196mph. The rotary engine is triple turbocharged and the car weighs less than a Lotus Exige S, at around 1029kg.
