You know the drill: it’s yet another ‘is car X faster than a Nissan GT-R?’ video. This time it’s the turn of Carfection to pit the much-loved, much-hated Japanese legend against something they bought along for the ride; the channel’s RS 6 Avant crew car.

It’s twin-turbo V8 and dog-carrying practicality versus twin-turbo V6 and Internet stardom. It’s not as close as you’d think, though, and without wanting to spoil all the delicious excitement for you, the GT-R just doesn’t seem quite on form, to us. Have a look and let us know what you think.

Nissan really need to update the R36. First it loses to a 911 Turbo S, then a 570S and now an estate! R35 is old, Nissan, so stop milking it like a fat cow (which it is).

Does nobody know physics around here? The increased mass actually does provide an advantage concerning tire grip out of corners. Less mass means less normal force between the ground and the tires. When a large torque (from the engine) is provided to the wheel, the tire (which in our case, won’t change its coefficient of friction), depending on the normal force the ground exerts on it, has a limit to the torque it can utilize before wheelspin occurs (when the static friction is overcome by the rotational torque). In order to increase the limit of the torque which can be applied to the wheel before wheelspin occurs, two things can be done.

  1. Increase the coefficient of friction between the tires and the ground (better tires)
  2. Increase the force the tires exert on the ground, thus increasing the normal force the ground exerts on the tire (Newton’s 2nd and 3rd Laws dictate that increasing the normal force also increases the frictional force, or in “car guy” terms, traction ). This can be done by providing active downforce (only occurs at high speeds) or by increasing mass.

From an engineering standpoint, this is quite clever, actually. Use mass to increase traction, and use computer systems (possibly torque vectoring) to make up for agility loss around corners. Now, this obviously isn’t perfect, but it’s much better than sheer weight reduction (which sacrifices a plethora things required by a road car).

Don’t get me wrong, I love the rs6 and would choose over the gtr in a heartbeat. But this seems a bit off. If the GTR can crack 60 in under 3 seconds, a bad start cant nearly be more than 3.5. And if Audi understated their 3.9 second, surely the best time the rs6 could post is 3.5 again. What’s with the annihlation of the gtr?

I think the only answers are 1: an incredibly terrible start (it looked slower than a normal GT-R) or 2: cold tyres means more grip for the audi because it puts more weight over the tyres. also tyre choice affects the race as well. chances are they put drag tyres on the audi, but hid it in the cinematic shots

What cars can do on paper and how they preform in reality are totally different. The Audi is simple to launch, brake torque it and your away with a flying start every time. The GTR’s launch control maybe better in the right environment, however there maybe factors hindering it’s effectiveness in this test

German cars in General seemingly rate engine outputs at the lowest potential value, i.e. in most condition the power outputs are higher then claimed.

Press cars also usually have a hard life, you never know that GTR may have been flogged from day 1 and it’s caused subtle engine hickups, wear and subsequently reduced it’s output, it’s a possible factor.
