Watch The Nio EP9 Whirr Its Way Around The Nurburgring
The full, uninterrupted video of the 1341bhp, electric EP9's record-breaking Nurburgring lap has been released
We’re used to watching Nurburgring laps that are accompanied with lots of internally combusted, angry noise, so this particular video is quite a weird one to watch. It shows the 1341bhp Nio EP9 whirring its way around the Nurburgring, clocking the electric vehicle lap record in the process.
The magic figure was 7min 5.16sec, and since bagging the record last year, the NextEV sub-brand has added to its achievements with both the electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle lap records at Circuit of the Americas.
If you think the Nurburgring lap video looks quick, it’s worth bearing in mind that to prevent its batteries overheating, the car wasn’t run at full power during any part of the lap.

Since I’m the first one..
That was shockingly fast!
2 minutes late
It sounds like some freaking spaceship
“…it’s worth bearing in mind that to prevent its batteries overheating, the car wasn’t run at full power during any part of the lap.”
As much as a 7:05 lap time for an EV is insanely impressive, the fact that it was limited in power doesn’t give it much more credit.
Mainly because a similar issue is true of most combustion engines too: if it wasn’t overheating a lot of supercars would be able to develop more power than they currently do. For example, Bugatti themselves confirm that making an engine to produce 1500hp is, in fact, easier than not letting the whole thing melt itself down.
So if the car is overheating (let it be electric or ICE) and thus has to run at a lower power output, than that particular power output is it’s maximum by design
But then again, we know electric motors beat combustion engines, so why not put them in a different category.
Same reason why Nissan won’t develop the GT-R engine further than the 600bhp in the Nismo. They could easily develop it way further but that would hinder reliability, efficiency and fuel economy (economy isn’t as relevant here but just to mention). If anything it’s the same story for every performance car manufacturer. We really think these world class engineers at Ferrari and Porsche can’t make 1200bhp monsters if they felt like it?
Whoa!
The EP9 is lightning quick!
kill me now
Poor parakeet.
Not shocked that it’s silent
The video has no sound?…. Wait that’s just the car
Well that noise is headache inducing…..
I love its noise!
The noise that you do hear, is that from the engine or the gearbox or the tyres? Maybe a combination?
Its the engine as electric cars have no gearbox and tires should never sound that high pitched. The whining comes from the super high rpm’s achieved by the electric motors
