Watch Porsche 911 Turbos, GT3s And Caymans Do Vicious Launch Control Getaways

In the spirit of power, performance and noise, we've compiled the best bits of a recent Porsche track driving event in Germany

We recently had access to Porsche’s line-up of sports cars, including 911 Turbos, Cayman GTS models and Boxsters. Included in the day’s events was a launch control test of each car, which would showcase just how quickly (and easily) each car could hit 100mph+ from a standing start.

On paper, the cars’ performance figures are quite remarkable. The Porsche Boxster GTS, for example, produces 325bhp from its naturally aspirated 3.4-litre, six-cylinder engine; 0-62mph takes just 4.7sec with the optional PDK gearbox. The similarly-powered Cayman GTS (335bhp) covers the same sprint in 4.8sec with the same ‘box.

In the 911 range, the performance figures are truly mind-blowing; the lightweight and track-focussed 3.8-litre 911 GT3 sends its 469bhp through the rear wheels and will hit 0-62mph in 3.5sec before hitting its top speed of 196mph (the same top speed as a Nissan GT-R).

The most ferocious 911 model in the range is the Turbo S. Thanks to forced induction, the sports car’s 3.8-litre engine now develops 552bhp. The 0-62mph dash takes 3.1sec with the PDK gearbox and top speed climbs slightly to 198mph.

The cars you’ll see doing launch control starts in the video above (launch control is engaged by sliding the PDK ‘box into Sport+, hitting the throttle and releasing the brake pedal) include a 911 Turbo cabriolet (512bhp, 0-62mph in 3.3sec), a couple of GT3s (469bhp), a 911 Turbo coupe, two Boxsters (a manual and a PDK model), plus a few Caymans, GTS cars included. The onboard launch (1min 32sec) is in a 911 GT3 with the optional PDK.

You’ll also hear me laughing like a school girl in the passenger seat of a Cayman during a massive powerslide, and will get to see some 911s in action on track. The sound quality doesn’t do these cars justice, but take it from me, they are deafening when you’re standing behind them.
