Watch The Updated Porsche 911 GT3 RS Smash Out A Sub-7min 'Ring Lap
Clearly not content with snagging the fastest production car time at the Nurburgring with the 911 GT2 RS last year, Porsche has sent its updated GT3 RS around the track for Nordschleife glory. And my word, is the footage impressive to watch.
Via an utterly committed performance from works driver Kévin Estre, an incredible 6:56.4 was clocked. That’s 24 seconds faster than the 997 GT3 RS, over 12 seconds faster than Sport Auto managed to get the pre-facelift 991 RS around, and it’s also Porsche’s third car to dip below the seven-minute mark.
Porsche revealed the ‘991.2’ GT3 RS at the Geneva Motor Show last month. The bodywork has been slightly tweaked, and the massive ‘GT3 RS’ side decals are back as standard. With 520bhp from its 4.0-litre flat-six, it’s slightly more powerful than the car it replaces, and it revs higher than before too - there’s now a sonorous 9000rpm ceiling to enjoy, making the mad on-board footage at the top of this page all the more enjoyable to watch.

I’ve read, that the ‘Ring got a new tarmac on some sections, after the lap time record from the 918 Spyder Weissach Paket. The track should be smoother and not that bumpy anymore. I think the trigger was the death of a race driver in his Nissa GTR, if I’m not mistaken.

Must’ve been on a shorter section of the track, I saw that too and I don’t believe they wouldn’t roll with it unless there was some reason. Plus, that car doing a 6:20 is just impossible, soo…
I really am losing interest in Nurburgring lap times…
Well, faster and faster times are a norm now. But in the end, I suppose it only proves a limited number of things. Perhaps it’s the title some manufacturers are aiming for, or a certain performance threshold
