Watch Your Back, BMW 3-Series, The New Jag XE Is Gunning For You

Jaguar has given a sneak peak and some tantalising details of its upcoming compact exec and rival to the 3-series

Jaguar has revealed a teaser image of its important BMW 3-series rival, which is dubbed the Jaguar XE.

The last time Jaguar had a compact exec was the X-Type, which finished production in 2009. The XE will be a very different beast to that car, which had a platform borrowed from the Ford Mondeo and old fashioned styling. Instead, you'll get the sort of sharp styling we've already seen on the XF and current XJ, and a brand-new aluminium monocoque chassis - a first in this class.

It'll also receive a range of new 2.0-litre petrol and diesel four-pots, with sub-100g/km CO2 emissions possible. What interests us more, though, is the talk of a range-topping 186mph version, which means we're likely to see a BMW M3-rivalling R or R-S model. This is good.

Jaguar will reveal more details about the car later in the year ahead of the XE's mid-2015 launch.
