Watching A Viper Owners' Club Blowing Up A Defenceless Corvette Makes Me Lose Faith In Car Lovers

Is it just me, or is hating the car that rivals your personal favourite - so much so that you want to blow it up - a tad baffling? And a waste of a car?

If there’s one thing I’ve never really understood, it’s arch rivalries among car fans. There’s the broader ones like import vs muscle, the manufacturer specific rivalries like Australia’s bitter Ford vs Holden showdown, or a rivalry based on two different cars, like the classic Subaru Impreza turbo vs Mitsubishi Evo ding-dong. This video concerns the latter sort of rivalry, in this instance, Dodge Viper vs Chevrolet Corvette.

It seems the group of Viper fans we see here hate the Corvette so much, they went out and bought a C4 version, and set out to destroy it. After pummelling it with a few rounds from a 50 calibre machine gun, the car was packed with Tannerite - a binary explosive - and shot a few more times until it blew up.

This seems like a bit of a waste. I know the C4 is far from the most coveted ‘Vette, but it still appeals to countless enthusiasts, so why blow it up just because you’re a hardcore fan of the other car? To me, it’s baffling. I used to own a Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 ‘Cosworth’, absolutely loved it and even joined a 190 club. But did that make me want to go out and blow up an E30 M3? Certainly not.

I’ve always been up for trying out any sort of motor I can get my hands on, and investigating absolutely every car scene out there. To restrict yourself to one, particularly to the point at which you hate the rival group/manufacturer/model means you’re missing out on a lot.

Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, and perhaps these guys and girls just fancied blowing something up and a Corvette seemed nicely fitting. But could they not have chosen something more worthy of destruction? Like a 1992 Nissan Sunny or something similarly boring…?
