What Fleet Of Cars Would You Buy For The Price Of 1 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead?
Despite what some people think, I, and other car journalists don’t actually own the cars you see in the reviews sections of automotive websites and magazines. Sometimes we get invited to international and national launches of new models, other times we book cars in for short-term loans. The car you see here, is an example of the latter. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead was delivered to me in the back of a lorry this morning, and on Wednesday it’ll be back on the same lorry en route to Rolls-Royce HQ.
Following the delivery, CT Head of Marketing, Gabor, asked the question that everyone wants to know the answer to: “How much?” The price of the 6749cc, V12-powered Drophead starts from around £352,000, which buys you a house in west London. But you can’t drive a house, which is presumably why Gabor began listing the cars he’d purchase with the aforementioned amount of cash in his back pocket. On the list were the following cars:
1. Caterham 620R: 2.0-litre supercharged Ford Duratec engine; 311bhp/219lb ft torque; 0-60mph: 2.79sec; £49,995.
2. BMW M4 auto: 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six; 425bhp/406lb ft; 0-62mph: 4.1sec; £59,145.
3. Seat Ibiza 1.4 ACT FR; 1.4-litre TSI; 138bhp/184lb ft; 0-62mph: 7.8sec; for use as an easy-to-park and nippy city car; £16,760.
4. Honda S2000 project car: 2.0-litre, four-cylinder; 240bhp/153lb ft; £5000 plus £100k on mods.
5. 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder: 5.2-litre V10; 560bhp; 0-62mph: 3.8sec; Top speed: 201mph; £130,000.
As you can see, Gabor’s list of cars he’d prefer to own over the Drophead is quite varied and includes something for almost all occasions. The question I’d like to put to you now is: what fleet of cars would you buy with £352,000? Or is the Rolls-Royce all the car you’d ever want?
