Who The Hell Is Top Gear's New Presenter Rory Reid? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Rory Reid's TG presenter announcement came as a surprise, but the outspoken and controversial journalist might just be the perfect man for the job
Who The Hell Is Top Gear's New Presenter Rory Reid? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

When Chris Evans was announced as the host of post-Clarkson Top Gear, he revealed that anyone could submit a video to become a co-presenter. Most of us fobbed this off as a clever marketing ploy to get people on his side, but with today’s announcement of the full show lineup, it turns out one man did make it through the public auditions.

That man is Rory Reid, and he’s stood on the far left of the image above. Fear not, though, as he is far from some lucky chancer; he’s got loads of presenting experience, and is host of one of the funniest car review series on YouTube. And if you were worried about new Top Gear being boring and politically correct, the appointment of Reid shows Evans’ intent to stay fun and controversial.

As you can see from his showreel above, Reid isn’t afraid to step pretty close to the line, and his reviews are all the more hilarious for it. We’re big fans of his work on Recombu Cars here at Car Throttle, as the world of motoring journalism can be rather stuffy, making the likes of old Top Gear and Rory Reid a breath of fresh air.

One of the funniest videos he’s recorded for Recombu - and probably the most likely to get the BBC bosses a little nervous - comes in the form of his review of the Jaguar F-Type V6 convertible.

Of particular note is the interior description; while using the heater dials he says, “I’ve never played with a porn star’s nipples, but I’d imagine that’s how it feels”, while he compares storage netting to “a prostitute’s stocking.”

But he’s not a one trick pony, courting controversy to get clicks. Reid made a name for himself last year when he reviewed a Rolls-Royce Ghost through the medium of poetry. Now, we might not want to see every car reviewed in rhyme, but it shows the level of quirky creativity Reid brings to the table.

Away from cars, Reid has presented mainstream shows such as Gadget Geeks on Sky 1, in which he tested new technology as one of the show’s lead presenters. He’s also a well-established motoring and technology journalist, having written for Bloomberg and the Daily Telegraph, as well as launching CNET’s Car Tech channel. This isn’t his first time working with the BBC either, as he’s been a weekly contributor to Radio 5 Live’s Saturday Edition and has appeared on The One Show.

Now you know more about the new guy, what do you think of his appointment? Head over to our poll and join the discussion about the new presenters!

Very much looking forward to seeing him on TG. He’s funny af IRL, very confident in front of the camera and has real presence. You’ll all like what he’ll bring to the table, 100%.

+1 for Rory. Met him on my very first car launch back in 2011 (Volvo XC60 whoop!) - he’s a nice chap, but more importantly, is massively relatable to a younger audience.

Oh, and his lyrical flow is ON POINT.

So when does his mixtape drop? I’m guessing +6 Months, yeah?

I read in somewhere before that Clarkson created the idea but it was in the contract that it was property of the BBC, but I could be wrong. I have been before. And I’m sure I will be again!
