Why I'm Sad The Ford Mondeo No Longer Comes In Hot 'ST' Form

I liked the old Ford Mondeo ST220. It was an honest, down-to-earth performance car, providing a way into sports saloon ownership without the need to re-mortgage your house or sell some spare organs. However, when the third-generation Mondeo arrived in 2007, the ST badge disappeared from the range. Sure, you could initially spec the car with the 2.5-litre five-pot from the Focus ST if you wished, but with 217bhp and a lot of weight to shift around, it wasn’t all that quick.

It’s a similar story now. The fourth-generation Mondeo will soon be with us, and you’ll be able to buy it with a 237bhp version of Ford’s 2.0-litre Ecoboost engine, but it won’t be considered a sport model, and there are no plans to revive the ST name. This is a shame, particularly now we can see what a modern ST Mondeo might look like, courtesy of these pictures created by prolific car renderer X-Tomi Design.

With the 305bhp 2.3-litre Ecoboost four-pot found in the new Mustang slung under the bonnet, it’d be plenty fast, perhaps with the power sent to the front wheels through a trick limited-slip differential, as we may see in the upcoming Focus RS.

It wouldn’t be a huge seller, but low sales don’t stop Vauxhall making its Insignia VXR halo car. So, Ford: how about it?
