Why We Don't Want Toyota To Make A Four-Door GT86
Want a Toyota GT86? Of course you do. You definitely want one in the form of a cheeky CT-style shooting brake.
But do you want one with four doors and four extra inches in the wheelbase? Probably not, but a source close to Toyota has apparently leaked plans for a lengthened ‘GT86 Sedan’ - and it could be on the verge of production.
Australian motoring website motoring.com.au reckons it’ll be a four-door coupe/saloon cross with a 100mm longer wheelbase to allow for rear seats, and almost certainly a bigger boot to swallow a couple of extra sets of golf clubs. Or other limp-wristed rubbish.
Let’s face it: if you bought a bigger, longer, heavier GT86 with space for rear passengers you’re probably not the sort that tackles the Drive Thru sideways, and to us that feels like it cheapens the GT86 sub-brand.
The other obvious problem is that the high-revving petrol engine isn't exactly ideal for hauling the weight of four people and luggage around. Toyota would have to give the Sedan more guts, which would completely change the car's character - for the worse.
Although motoring.com.au’s source says the GT86 Sedan will hit next year’s Geneva Motor Show, we’re not so sure this is serious. Why would Toyota ruin the image of the only proper driver’s car it’s had in years? We'd definitely be more keen on the convertible concept.
After Toyota has finally got car enthusiasts back on side, this sounds like a daft move but we’ll keep an ear to the ground for any more news on it.
