Why You Absolutely Must Buy This Peugeot 205 Rallye

With CT editor Alex dispatched to France recently to test the new Peugeot 208 GTI 30th Anniversary, all thoughts turned to the car it’s designed to celebrate: the old 205 GTI. As much as we love that car, though, it’s not the only spicy 205 worthy of our attention. There’s also this: the 205 Rallye.

With a modest 1.4-litre engine putting out 75bhp in UK versions (other countries received a more potent 102bhp 1.3-litre), these are a little down on power compared to the full-fat 1.6 and 1.9-litre GTI models, but they have a trump card: low weight.

The already rather spartan (by today’s standards) 205 was stripped of absolutely everything unnecessary for the Rallye, so these are still relatively nippy considering the low power output. More importantly, they’re endlessly chuckable and have the potential for a hugely enjoyable driving experience.

According to How Many Left, just 147 are still around in the UK, with only 54 licensed for road use.

That’s why when one comes along like this example, you should snap it up straight away. Particularly if the car in question is up for just £1500. Go on, you know you want to!
