It was supposed to be a simple sweep of the classifieds to check the prices of third-generation Toyota Supras for a future article. It should have only taken a few minutes. And yet, my entire day has been brought to a standstill by a spell of ubearable lust for something I stumbled upon: this second-generation ‘Celica Supra’.

I’ve seen plenty of third and fourth generation Supras kicking around in the classifieds before, but I can’t think of many times when one of these has cropped up. Coming from before the ‘Celica’ prefix was dropped (early Supras had styling derived from the Celica, and thus were badged Celica Supra), this gorgeous fastback coupe has the sort of boxy 1980s styling I can’t help but love.

The looks are reminiscent of the Toyota ‘AE86’ Corolla, although here, there’s no ‘Tofu Tax’ (the old Corolla’s appearance in classic manga series Initial D has led to vastly inflated prices) to worry about: this example’s up for just £1750. It comes with a 178bhp straight-six, and while it’s not a perfect example - the dreaded tin worm has made an inevitable appearance in several places, and it’s an automatic - I think this old Celica Supra has the makings of a great winter project.

I throw this line around a lot, but this time, I really mean it: someone pick up the phone before I do.
