A petrol-powered Maserati Levante has joined the range alongside the diesel already on sale in the UK.

There was originally some doubt over whether or not Maserati GB would take up the option of the Ferrari-built twin-turbocharged V6, but the 3.0-litre unit is now officially a choice.

It delivers 424bhp and a rich, bombastic soundtrack along with potential for 164mph and 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds; not bad for a big SUV like the Levante.

Known as the Levante S, its arrival in the UK is, apparently, in response to customer demand, but given how few petrol-powered SUVs you generally see on the roads, we’re not sure where this demand is coming from. The Premier League, perhaps…?

Prices for the S will start from £70,755, but don’t count on leaving the dealership without having committed at least a few thousand more on some of the huge array of options available. From personal experience on the car’s launch, adding £15,000 is easier than it should be…

Not sure why the press photo shows it splashing in mud, since less are going to be used for that purpose than 911R owners that actually drive their cars
