This Is Your First Look At The All-Electric BMW i4

BMW’s fist pure BEV saloon has been revealed in camouflage during cold-weather testing in Sweden, alongside the upcoming iX3 and a test mule of the controversial iNext SUV

BMW has released the first official pictures of the i4 electric saloon, along with some intriguing claims for driving range.

The traditional three-box BEV, the first BMW will have made, will be able to drive up to 373 miles between charges, according to tests done to European WLTP standards. That’s around a fifth more driving range than the best of what’s around today or scheduled for the near future, and well into internal combustion car range.

BMW also promises ‘outstanding sportiness,’ which works much better as a phrase if you say it with a German accent. The fifth-generation eDrive technology will, says the company, combine ‘inspiring performance’ and a high level of ride comfort.

What’s more, the new charger (see what we did, there?) will launch from standing to 62mph in just 4.0 seconds on the way to a top speed of ‘over 124mph.’ The car won’t have a gearbox, so its top speed is limited by its single ratio.

It won’t be built until 2021 but BMW has confirmed that it’ll be hammered together at its main Munich factory.

The iX3 has also been confirmed, this time in lighter camouflage. It’s due to arrive in 2020 using the existing X3 shell, but featuring BMW’s fifth-gen electric drive for the first time on the open market. Driving range will be around 250 miles at best, but can use DC 150kW chargers to ‘pump’ electro-juice back in nice and quickly.

The third car on the Arjeplog ice is the iNext, the large SUV derived from the Vision iNext concept. Like the i4 it’ll do up to 373 miles per charge but will also boast level three autonomous driving tech. It will start production at a similar time to the i4, but at BMW’s Dingolfing plant.

I see it too, hopefully more of the E36 design elements carry over.

That design you see is just created by the camouflage .

probably not carrying over.
It will look like any other BMW:

So, if I take this correctly it can theoretically go 600 km but in reality it should be about a quarter of that during winter. Top speed of 200 km/h is also not very impressive. It feels like BMW is in a free fall trading their reputation built up over the years for a quick buck. This electrification along with FWD bimmers is just wrong.

A quarter? BMW batteries have shown to be the LEAST affected by cold weather among current manufacturers. The most I’ve seen on my i3 is 15-20% loss when below freezing. Maybe a 25% loss if not preconditioned. A 75% loss in range on a much newer and larger battery is ludicrous claim at best.

The i3 is fun. It still feels like a BMW and the i4 will be even better. Do they compare to my 550i? Of course not, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s going to be a great electric vehicle.

Agree with you on FWD. So sad.

aah i hoped bmw’s i-models would stay as futuristic as the i3 and i8, but of course they cant do that if they want to sell them in the regular market

I don’t think we should be hating it… Government restrictions and environment care stuff is strong. With this approach, cool manual N/A cars will gonna die anyawys at some point and everything will be doomed. I Think we should support the old school manufacters in this shift to new technology in case to survive and deliver quality style we did liked before as much as possible within restricted regulations.
