Cars that I think are ugly
Hi.
There are a few cars that many people love, but I just can’t see what people like about them.
To start off, the best-looking car ever designed, according to many magazines:
The Lamborghini Miura
Okay, so that’s a bit of a clickbait - I love the styling of the Miura. BUT there is one part I just can’t get my head around: the eyelashes. There are Miuras which have the headlight surrounds completely smooth and then there are Miuras which have the weird plastic grooves on either side of the headlight.
All I can say is that it looks like those hideous eye-lash kits that people put on VW Beetles and Nissan Marches which have the round bugeye headlights.
ALFA Romeo
Before I really got into cars, I was looking at… cars. But from a non-car-person perspective. One manufacturer that just looked plain ugly to me was ALFA Romeo.
I admit the GTV above looks very nice, what I don’t like is the GTV below.
It wasn’t just the GTV I didn’t like; the first ALFA to make me vomit inside my mouth was a 156. What do they have in common that I don’t like?
The triangle grille resembling an owl’s beak. Back then I didn’t know of their heritage (i.e cars before the 80’s) and the triangle just looked out of place and intrusive on many square bodies - even into the 90’s and 2000’s it looked out of place.
I loved the 8c; I hated looking at it from the front.
Svedish cars.
The C70 coupe is a sporty thing. Okay, well the turbo version has as much power as… well a Japanese car without a turbo.
Anyway I’m not here to talk numbers.
I think they are bland.
Looking at the C70, it looks exactly like a family sedan or wagon from the front - so much so that I barely noticed it only has 2 doors.
Saab. I like what they did with the rear tail lamps, but thte rest of the thing just looks incredibly dull. No surf line, no exterior trim to separate the top half of the car from the bottom - it’s so minimalistic that it’s boring. You might like it, but I’m falling asleep looking at it.
Mercedes
The W201 is nice but not great, while the W213 is hideous. If I was buying a new car, I would look past the AMG’s hair-splitting times and 9-speed 9G-Tronic sequential-manual automatic-dual-clutch system, and straight at the design.
What’s with the big bulging round bonnet like on a Buick/Holden Cascada?
And what is with those weird jelly-bean headlights?
Do people actually like the look of them?
Then they took those two worst parts of the car and gave them tumours when they designed the GT R. I didn’t mind the grille on the W213, but on this thing it’s bulging out the front.
And then the rear is small and curved like the tail of a Porsche 911.
Why do people think this looks good?
Audis from the 90's and 2000's.
This sits in the same category as the Swedish cars - it’s just boring and bland.
Is that an S6? I have no idea. An accountant in a grey suit is probably driving it.
At least they kept the square grille from the Audi Quattro S1 that won the rallies in the early 80’s… until the other car manufacturers also started using 4WD in cars that drove better.
VW Corrado
I know some of these had a turbo, and they stem from the beautiful Sciroccos of the 70’s and 80’s, but to me they look ugly like the Fiat Coupe. The upswept rear bodyline looks good on a race car, but on this weird hatchback-coupe it looks out of place. Combine that with the 90’s restyle of the Giugiaro wedge and the curved bonnet that doesn’t line up with the headlights and grille and you get something puke-worthy.
Speaking of VW’s, I think the MKiii Golf also took a step backwards. The shape looks cheap, the headlights are blobs and the grille doesn’t look good in body colour.
The models with the colour coded trims strips look bland and the ones with the black parts look ugly.
And I thought the Polo was the cheap version.
New Skodas
These have been given great reviews by the press and reviewers for their design. It makes me wonder how much VAG has been paying the people they get to review Skodas because the whole front is hideous.
On the rear you get the double-C tail lights as Skoda likes to point out. Those look alright.
Put your hand up and cover the front of the car. The body looks nice - almost like a Ford Falcon or Subaru Legacy.
And now look at the front.
I thought the previous generation was bad; now they integrated the fog lights into the grille and have the headlights misaligned and in a weird shape.
To make things worse, they took the giant grille and made it more like the BMW kidney grille. The result is a weird moustache, or The Joker’s lipstick.
And then this happened.
They took a badly designed front end and dropped it onto an SUV - and people are snatching these up left, right, and centre.
The bonet is so low and the windscreen is massive. It is probably good for visibility, but for aesthetics it is disproportional - it looks like someone photoshopped that hideous Skoda front onto a Mitsubishi Outlander or something.
Not ugly.
Alright, time for something positive.
I said the AMG GT was hideous, but this older version looks good. The bonnet is straighter like a Corvette and the headlights are nice and flow with the body.
The front grille surround is a bit pinched forwards but it almost looks like the front of an F1 car.
It’s 12:30AM so I’m gonna look at a few Saabs until I fall asleep.
Good night.

The ugly thing you pointed out in the Miura is literally something you cant unsee…
how do u hate on alfa
The Brera is nice.
I actually agree with almost all of this list. I do think the amg gt is gorgeous, and the w213 is fine (I’m not a big fan of these kinds of cars anyway)
I honestly tried to read the whole article, but I cannot believe your eyes and brain are in the right place. Thankfully beauty is in the eye of the beholder, because my friend, trust me, I do not think we are ever going to fight over the same girl. Your opinion is duly noted but please, do not write any future car articles, spare me your opinion.. please!!!!
Too late, I just wrote one.
