Cars That Have No Water Pump But Still Don't Overheat? Thermosiphon Systems Explained!

Some early automotive designs didn’t use water pumps to move coolant around, and instead counted on a clever design to keep coolant flowing! Thermosyphon systems may not be made any more, but their basic design serves as a great introduction to cooling system function!

The design shown in this video is very, very simple compared to modern cooling systems! It contains the engine block, water outlet, upper radiator hose, radiator, lower radiator hose, and a water inlet connected back up to the engine block. Coolant is found in all of these parts, and will be drawn in green. Green is the most well-known coolant color, but definitely not the only one! We will go over coolants in another video!

Thermosiphon systems sometimes have a thermostat, but this example is kept simple and doesn’t include one. The next video in the cooling system series will discuss temperature regulating systems, including thermostats.
