I finally saw a dream car! (Hino Contessa)
This is the Hino Contessa.
I found out about it by searching car dealerships in Japan, and soon learned that it was in fact built by truck company Hino.
Much like what Isuzu did in the 1960’s, Hino meddled in the world of sports cars - this time with the help of Renault.
Unlike the Bellet and 117 Coupe, the Hino Contessa was a mid-engined rear-wheel-drive sedan and coupe.
Although it is now a rare and sought after (in Japan) vehicle, many years ago when us Commonwealth-ers were in denial over cars built outside Europe being any good, one reviewer said something along the lines of “the handling was unlike any other car - it was so terrible it would understeer and oversteer at the same time in any corner”.
That sentence alone crushed sales outside of Japan.
This is the video of the actual car.
I was actually hiding from the police by pulling onto the nearest offramp (I was speeding on the motorway). I noticed a car with what looks like the Transformers icon as abadge, then quickly realised what it was.
I hit the record button, but GoPros take about 3 seconds to turn on.

That’s a really cool car, haven’t even heard about it before😎 a truly special layout with the middle engine in a sedan😅
They look amazing when refurbished
Mid engined sedan. That’s not something you hear everyday. This is just amazing.
I really like these less known japanese cars from the 60’s like the Isuzus but I had never heard of this one.
Very nice!
