6 Recent Cars That Have Classic Car Potential
These are 6 recent cars that I think have potential to become desirable cars in 20-30 years time. Wether it’s their looks, their oddness or the performance. No supercars on the list, I only look at common cars. Cars that could be within budget for our children.
You may think computers will keep modern cars from becoming classic cars, but trust me people will always find ways of keeping them going if they want to. My GTI is 28 years old and it has two computers on board for engine management. They still work, so no computers won’t stop cars. Yes, electronic components will have to be changed but people will always find ways to repair things and keep cars running, if they want.
Citroën Cactus
We’ll start of with the hardest one to explain. Just like a lot of you probably, I am not a fan of this car. I think it looks strange. but look at it, look at the current concept cars, there’s something going on. Maybe this car is just a few years ahead of it’s time when it comes to design.
With car design this is how it often goes: they make a concept car, then they spend a few years polishing the design, making it more practical and less futuristic looking, then they put it into production. With this.. thing, it seems as if the French just didn’t bother with that part between concept and production version, and went off to drink wine instead.
The result is a car that looks like a concept car. Everytime I see one on the road I think “Erm wow…? Oh yeah it’s that cactus thing!”. The oddness of this car gives it classic car potential I think.
Mazda MX-5 ND
The first good looking MX-5 since the mk1, and according to reviews it’s very good. Doesn’t really need much explaining I think, the car explains itself. Both the looks and the performance give this car classic car potential.
VW Up!
Again, a car that explains itself a little less easy than the MX-5. It’s a cute little city car, and as we know cute little city cars are popular. Design-wise it’s also not a typical VW. It’s a less conservative than the usual VW, it has a strange name and it’s a completely new model. But it’s quirky styling give it classic car potential, and according to people I know it isn’t that bad to drive either. It only has 75bhp but it weighs less than a tonne. Let us all pray that the GT concept will be put into production, it might catch the spirit of the original Golf mk1 GTI! I’m very looking forward to that!
Volvo C30
Just look at that. Not daring, not too conservative. Every line looks right. No flamboyant curves and sharp angles, no odd headlights that stick out of the bonnet, no strange doorsills, just a good looking hatchback. And as we know from history good looking hatchbacks can become very desirable.
Since this car is a Volvo and was primarily bought in diesel form, I suspect petrol versions could become very desirable in a couple of ten years time.
Renault Twizy
Another French oddity. At first I was sceptical, but at the Brussels Autoshow this year I sat in it and I’m sold. You wouldn’t want this as a daily, which raises the question “How are the French selling this?”. It’s not really waterproof as such, so once it rains it’s quite useless since it has no doors. You can get special door panels to protect you from the weather, but from the looks of it they still don’t seal the car completely, and your Twizy is less cool. Those scissor doors are seriously cool!
The interior is basic, a speedo, a few switches and a radio, that’s all. Because you just don’t need more. The interior seems to be waterproof, looks a bit like the plastic footrest on a scooter. Which is a good thing, given the not-so-waterproofness of the car.
Alfa Romeo 4C
We end with a car that explains itself. A little more expensive, and a bit rarer than the others but that doesn’t take away the fact that it’ll probably become quite collectable. I mean, who doesn’t like a fast Alfa? Be wise, and buy your 4C at the point where prices are at the lowest. The prices will go down but there will come a point where they’ll shoot up.
Comments
I feel discouraged by the lack of mustangs, all of them will be classics someday.
Though I could see the twizzy becoming the modern day gremlin
The problem with the Mustang is that the ‘60s mustang is always there in the background to remind you that you don’t have the mustang you wanted as a kid.
I totally agree on the 4C. I really want one (preferably white)
