Another 7 of the most complicated cars ever-Your suggestions

In a recent post, I presented some of the most complex cars ever made. There were so many suggestions, they turned into another list of complex cars. So here is a selection of the best suggestions and some other examples. Hope you enjoy!

1. Toyota Prius

Behold, the most hated car on the CT community. Surely, there is almost no thrill on driving one of these and practically every user of this community shouted some hate words at it. However, it is undeniable it has brought Hybrid power to the masses. Using an intricate design (kammback) to minimize aero drag, an Atkinson cycle engine and an interesting system to alternate between electric and gas power.

2. Porsche 959

Now we’re talking. This blisteringly fast monster was produced as an homologation version of a Group B car and was also later converted into a Le Mans racer. It featured a composite bodywork of aluminum and kevlar, the most modern all wheel drive system of its time and an equally clever twin turbo setup, separating both turbines for each cylinder bank, practically nullifying turbo lag . Moreover, it beared the title of the world’s fastest street legal production car until the Ferrari F40 came one year later. Also, it won the Dakar rally in 1986

3. Honda NSX

The legendary car developed with help of mythical pilot Ayrton Senna was stuffed with technology. It was one of the first cars to feature VTEC (yo), the first mass produced car to have an all aluminum body. Senna helped to tune the suspension setup. Furthermore, it had titanium connecting rods, four-wheel ABS, electric steering and throttle. Also, it could beat the Ferrari 328, do I need to tell more?

4. BMW i8

Another super aerodynamic and efficient hybrid but this time, the Bavarian Motor Works did a heck of a good job. Its super intricate transmission allows for gear changes with constant acceleration, filling the gaps between gear shifts with electric power. It has many other innovations, such as laser headlights and everything electronic based you can imagine (ABS, EBD etc.). This is a classic on the making.

5.Porsche 917

This LeMans beast was one of the most technologically advanced racing cars in the world when it was made. Its 12 cylinder boxer engine is an absolute symphony to listen. Moreover, it was so complicated, it actually needed an eighteen-step “ritual” to be started (If you are curious read it here: http://jalopnik.com/if-you-forgot-how-to-start-your-porsche-917-read-this-1599290083) . Not to mention the pressurized gas-filled frame to instantly detect cracks which also served as oil line for the front oil cooler.

6. VW Phaeton

VW’s top tier and flagship car was utterly filled with technology and wiring. Its electrical system is so complex it has two miles of wiring (for communication between computer modules, powerlines, sensors etc.) alone! The Phaeton’s engines were also very interesting . Some options, such as the W12 and V10 TDI (cough cough dieselgate) were beautiful pieces of engineering as well.

7. Tesla model S

The Tesla model S, a masterpiece from the genius of silicon valley mega entepreneur Elon Musk, is a real game changer. It has so much technology and innovation that very few cars can match today. An absurd all-electric 265 miles range, ludicrous mode for 0-100km/h times of 2.8 seconds, autonomous driving on the driver’s command, gigantic touch screen panel for all ajustmens in the car and many other perks make this tech monster deserve a spot on this list.

This is it! Did you make it to this list? Do you have any more suggestions? Do you disagree with any acr on this list? Be sure to leave your opinion in the comments!

Great read, though I thought that the F40 was the car that took the 959’s title for top speed

It would have been nice if you mentioned what abt the car was complicated.. I mean I understand there was a ritual to start the 917..but What sort of ritual are we talking about.. Similarly when you talk abt the clever twin turbo in 959… It would be awesome if you could explain why it was a clever piece of engineering.. Stuff like that will actually make ur article stand out more… Thats my suggestion… Btw good job on investing your time to get this out.

I understand your point. I just tried to be more straightforward than craving into detail. I won’t hurt to do some editing tho. Thank you for the review!

The complicatedness of the Audi E tron Lemans far gave me a splitting headache. Especially when I did a physics project on one.
