10 cars that are longer than a Smart Roadster

The Smart Roadster is a sports car, with a rear engined, rear wheel drive layout, and a small three cylinder turbocharged engine producing 82 horses. And in my opinion it’s massively underrated, which can be shown easily in the aftermarket scene. And it’s quite small too, with a length of 3427 millimetres in total. Which made me wonder: Which cars are longer than a Smart Roadster?

1. 2017 Ford Fiesta

Kicking off the list is the newest generation Ford Fiesta. To be honest, this was the car I expected to be around the same length. However, with it’s 4040 millimetres in length it’s a massive 613mm longer than a Smart Roadster. And that is what we consider a small car nowadays…

2. Mazda MX-5

The famous two seater roadster from Mazda is a small car, features pop-up headlights and is very popular in the tuning and project car scene. However, it can’t hide the fact it still is longer than the Smart. At 3950 millimetres, it’s 523mm longer. Even tho it’s modern brother shorter than the first generation Miata, even that one is still 488mm longer.

3. Volkswagen Golf mk1

The first generation Golf is also a small car, but I didn’t expect it’d still be longer than the Roadster. At 3705 millimetres it’s 478mm longer, and that’s still quite a lot for such a car. Seeing modern day Golfs you can see that in a period of 37 years the car has grown a lot bigger, and that trend will probably continue in the future

4. Nissan Micra/March K11

This one is also a car that people consider as a small car, but comparing it to a Smart Roadster doesn’t make it look small. At 3695 millimetres in length, it’s 468mm longer than the Roadster.

5. 2005 Mini Cooper

Since BMW bought the brand in 2000, the Mini hasn’t been that Mini anymore. At least not as Mini as they were in the sixties. Being 3635 millimetres long, it’s 208mm longer than the Smart. You can’t call that Mini anymore…

6. Volkswagen Up!

At the moment I looked this up I suspected the Smart to be as long as this one is. But while the Up! is one of the smallest four-door new cars you can buy, it’s 3600 millimetres length still makes it 173mm longer than the Smart.

7. Renault Twingo

One of my favourite small cars currently produced, it’s 102 millimetres shorter than it’s previous generation. Not a lot of cars shrink in size with the years… However, to my surprise it’s still longer than the Smart Roadster. At 3585 millimetres it’s 158mm longer than the Roadster

8. Nissan S-Cargo

A car that looks like a snail and is Japanese, that should be small right? You’re right, but the Smart Roadster still manages to be 73mm shorter than the S-Cargo, which is 3500 millimetres long

9. Smart Forfour

This one surprised me even more. Not only is it shorter than the Roadster, it also manages to shave off 90mm in total length from the Twingo, which is based on the same chassis. Even tho it’s shorter than it’s sister, it’s length of 3495 millimetres still makes it 68mm longer than the Roadster

10. Renault Twingo

This one I totally did not suspect being on this list. I seriously thought this would be smaller than the Smart Roadster. But oh boy I was wrong, because at 3430 millimetres in total length, it’s a massive 3mm longer than the Roadster…

Yeah. Even I was surprised with that result.
