Apparently, not many people know of the Maserati A6 series, so; here's a guide: 1947 - 1956 Maserati A6, A6G, A6GCM, and A6GCS

Powered by either a 1.5-litre or a 2.0-litre straight-6, the A6 (“A” standing for “Alfieri”, one of the Maserati brothers, “6” of course for the number of cylinders) was their GT/racing series. Of the variants, the “G” model had a cast iron block (in other words, the 2.0-litre engine, as that was the only one with a cast iron block, although displacements were mentioned in the names, “G” for “Ghisa”), the “CS” model was their GT series race car (“CS” for “Corsa & Sport), and lastly, the “CM” was a single seater (“CS” for “Corsa Monoposto”). In some cases, production years were mentioned, like the model above and below this section of text.

Typically 1940s and 1950s, the car got a massive amount of different bodies from different coachbuilders and designers, here’s the list:

  • Allemano
  • Bertone
  • Fantuzzi
  • Frua
  • Ghia
  • Pininfarina
  • Vignale
  • Zagato
In 1954, the “Ghisa” versions were fitted with DOHC engines too, meaning some could reach 210km/h (130mph).

Although the only notable motorsport victory for the A6 in its 9 year production run was the 1953 Italian GP (also driven by Fangio), the different versions of the A6 road cars have won multiple concours awards, the A6GCS/53 even won the “Polyphony Digital Award” in 2014 . Although, I must admit, not all of them were beautiful pieces of art…

All in all, the A6 series is filled with beautiful cars, and the pre-facelift A6 1500 by Pininfarina… My favourite of the series is probably the 1954 A6G/54 by Pininfarina, absolutely gorgeous. How about you? What do you think of Maserati’s main series of the late 1940s and early 1950s?

I learnt more about these when the 1956 A6G 2000 was found in a French barn a few years back - gorgeous car.

Indeed, a beautiful car, I remember seeing the images of when it was found, standing next to a Ferrari California, the only ones not to be parked outside

I just call it the A6Letters. Such a dumb name for an awesome car series.

well, the series name is A6, the letters only specify the variant, like GT, GTT and GT-R with the R34 Skyline
