WHY DO I HATE CROSSOVERS

Crossovers and SUV’s are becoming more and more popular recently. So why do I think that they are useless and that it’s better to get away from them?

  1. They are more expensive to buy

Because that Crossovers normally have a bigger body than the super mini of the family car they are based on they cost more than them. For example, Renault Clio and Renault Captur in the same version (Engine and equipment) the Captur costs will cost over 1500 pounds and the difference between a BMW X3 and a 3 series with the same Engine and the same equipment have a difference of about 6000 pounds more than the Clio and all you will got more from the captur is a bit more pose and sitting slightly higher. Something that you could do only by putting a few pillows under your seat

2.Their fuel economy is worse

To look like an off roader, the small Crossovers need to be higher and have a bit of stuff around them. As a result they weigh more than the cars they are based on which effects the fuel consumption. The difference between the Audi A3 and the Audi Q3 which is based on the same model has combined fuel consumption of 15.1 kilometers a liter while the Audi A3 with the same engine has a combined fuel consumption rate of 17.8 kilometers a liter.

  1. They are slower

As we’ve seen recently on an episode of “The Grand tour” an Alfa Romeo Stelvio is slower than a BMW M3 although it has more power because of a few reasons. It is heavier and higher and as a result it was a lot slower on the track. Now you might say that but the Alfa has got better skills on gravel but the fact is that it will be just as bad off road as any family or little hatchback. A mercedes A 45 AMG and a Mercedes GLA 45 AMG with the same engine and the same amount of power has a difference of 0.2 seconds in the 0-100 kp/h time and an Audi RS3 and an Audi RS Q3 has a difference of 0.3 seconds. It may not sound a lot but when you take into prospective that the q3 weighs more and that it is slightly higher of the ground you will find out that it will be slower not only accelerating to x speed but also in cornering and braking. An Alfa Romeo Stelvio and an Alfa Romeo Giulia both with the QV version set a lap time in the Nurburgring and the time of the Giulia was almost 20 seconds faster.

  1. They can’t really go off road

around 10 years ago there were still some crossovers that really could go off road. However this days it’s nearly impossible to find one and what was the biggest advantage off a crossover over a smaller car has been wiped out. Some of this days crossovers like the Juke, the Captur, Tucson and many other crossovers can’t go off road more than any ordinary car can do. some of this crossovers even have just front wheel drive so if you leave in Scandinavia for example, it also excludes their advantage of better grip in snow

  1. Some of them aren’t a lot bigger than a family car when it comes to size in the boot

This thing isn’t talking about all the crossovers because some of them do have a much bigger boot and a lot more space than the family car. However some of them are at the same size and that gives them no advantages on the smaller cars they are based on or on the family car they are trying to “prove” that it is better than it

That’s all I have to right and this is my conclusion. I am not saying that crossovers don’t have good things, but when you put them near a family car and check how many advantages the family car has in comparison to the crossovers. It does make me at least wonder, how do the crossovers become more and more popular?

Companies reasons to keep producing corssovers

  1. They are selling
  2. They are making them a profit
  3. That’s about it, the market decides what companies produce.
